My Family Criticized My Wife’s Cooking, So We Secretly Put Them to the Test
For months, my wife Megan worked hard to prepare meals for our family’s monthly dinners, but my relatives continually criticized her cooking. After seeing her hurt so many times, I decided to set up a secret test to reveal the truth behind their harsh comments.
Family dinners have been a long-standing tradition passed down from my grandmother. As kids, my siblings and I always looked forward to these gatherings, and we’ve continued the tradition as adults. When Megan and I began hosting, she was excited to be part of it, even taking over the cooking. However, the excitement quickly faded when the criticism began.
The first time Megan cooked, my sister Angela was quick to comment, “The food tastes so bland!” My brother Dan muttered, “The chicken is dry.” Even my mom made a remark about using less seasoning next time. Megan was crushed by the criticism, especially after putting in so much effort.
I tried to reassure her, saying, “Don’t worry, your cooking is amazing.” But the damage was done, and Megan decided she wouldn’t cook for the family again. Despite her reluctance, I convinced her to give it another try at the next dinner.
Megan prepared my mom’s favorite roasted chicken and Angela’s preferred red sauce pasta. Once again, the criticism flowed. Angela said the pasta was awful, and my mom discreetly spat out a piece of chicken, remarking it wasn’t good enough. Megan was devastated, and I couldn’t understand why they were treating her this way.
I began to suspect that they might be criticizing her on purpose. To find out, I proposed a secret plan: at the next dinner, we’d tell everyone I cooked, but Megan would actually make all the food. Reluctantly, Megan agreed.
At the next gathering, I told my family, “I cooked everything today,” and to my surprise (but not really), they raved about the food. Angela called the pasta “the best she’s ever had,” and my mom praised the roasted chicken. It was clear: they loved the meal when they thought I had made it.
That’s when I revealed the truth. “Actually, Megan cooked everything,” I said. The room fell silent. My mom’s face turned red, and Angela focused on her drink, while the rest tried to backtrack their comments.
Later that night, I apologized to Megan and told her we were done with these dinners. I couldn’t bear to see her treated so unfairly. When my family noticed our absence at future dinners, they questioned me. I told them the truth: “You humiliated my wife, and we won’t be coming back.”
In the end, my suspicions were confirmed—my family had never truly accepted Megan. But standing by her was the right decision. Together, we’ve created our own family traditions, filled with love and respect, where every meal feels like home.
